Phototherapy: sunlight helps you… sleep well!
Natural light influences our lives in many ways: it regulates our day-night cycle, our metabolism, and even sleep.
If you’re trying to improve the quality of your rest or wish to say goodbye to insomnia, you’ll be surprised by how the sun can be your ally!
We know it may sound like a contradiction. However, to enjoy a restful sleep by avoiding sleepless nights that make days appear even more difficult than what they are, it is essential to get some light, especially in the morning.
The American study on “morning light therapy”
Light therapy, also called “phototherapy”, has been studied in relation to numerous conditions such as seasonal affective disorders (SAD), circadian rhythm disorders, and insomnia.
According to a study conducted at the Lighting Research Center of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York State, exposure to morning sunlight keeps that delicate balance between sleep and wakefulness active.
“If you remove morning blue light waves, the onset of melatonin is delayed and, therefore, also sleep.”
Why does this happen? Our sleep is influenced not only by a small group of neurons but also by specific proteins activated when the retina is illuminated.
Good morning habits
As just explained, exposure to direct sunlight is more beneficial in the morning, and precisely within 60 minutes after leaving the bed and for about 30 minutes, possibly without wearing sunglasses.
Morning walk or outdoor breakfast?
A great way to get some sunlight is to take a short morning walk, or, if you’re lucky to have your workplace near your home, why not go on foot? On the contrary, if you have very little time available in the morning, during the summer, you can treat yourself to a pleasant breakfast outdoors, in the garden or on the balcony.

Remember that sleeping well and for the right amount of time should never be underestimated if you want to take care of yourself and lead a healthy lifestyle. And to do it in the best way, choose now the bed system that best suits your physical features!
